Asian-inspired retreat overlooks Block Island Sound

Affectionately named “Floating Rock” by its homeowner, living space in this custom hilltop home centers around an open courtyard and prominent boulder – a geologic feature for which the surrounding New England landscape is well known. Shoji-inspired glass doors afford an expanded living area in warmer months, and sweeping views of the Atlantic throughout the year. The design also encourages natural cooling and heating to suit the seasons. Large overhangs shade the interior in the summer, and allow sun to penetrate in the winter. The home features native stonework, concrete counters and floor tiles, red-cedar shingles, and vertical-grain fir throughout the interior. Radiant-heated floors are bamboo installed in a herringbone pattern. An addition, constructed several years later, seamlessly integrates guest quarters in two private towers at the back of the house.
